Fire destroyed a Belmont County home

BELLAIRE, Ohio -- Fire destroyed a Belmont County home Wednesday morning. The fire started about 1:30 a.m. at Dan Palicka's home on Rolling Hills Lane, about five miles outside of the city.
The Spirit of 76 Fire Department battled the fire and crews were back on the scene when the fire rekindled just before noon.
No one was injured, but Palicka lost everything.
Fire Chief Chris Albaugh said the cause is under investigation, but he believes it may have started in the woodburning stove.
The State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.

Fire Destroys Home; Man Injured Saving Pets

Fire broke out and destroyed a woman and her son's Bellaire home on Washington Street around 6:30 p.m. Friday night.
The sound of sirens blaring on the quiet street and the smell of smoke in the air alerted neighbors that the home was on fire.
June Rawson, who lives next door, said, "I saw fire trucks. I looked out the other bathroom window and seen smoke rolling out from underneath the porch roof."
The Neffs Fire Department prevented the fire from spreading to the home next door, but couldn't stop the man who lived there from running back inside to save the family pets. He had to be rushed to the hospital.
Neighbors said about six kittens didn't make it out, but the man saved a cat and five kittens.
Nick Masciarelli owns a business across the street, and is helping the kittens and family.
Masciarelli said, "I'm keeping the kittens here and helping her take care of them. I took her to the hospital this morning to see her son. I lost my home in 1992 in a fire. I know what it's all about."
The state fire marshal was back at the scene of the fire Saturday morning to investigate, but the cause is still unknown.

Landlord Disagreement Leads To Arson?

Firefighters in Bellaire said it was one of the worst arson fires they've ever had to battle.
On Thursday, the alleged arsonist faced felony arson charges.
Officials said it all started with a landlord-renter disagreement.
The landlord said the person who started the fire is 53-year old Denzil Ice.
The landlord said Ice was upset after his daughter was evicted from the house.
He also said he filed several police reports because Ice called him several times threatening to torch the property.
After an investigation by police and the fire department, Ice will be held responsible for the flames.
Some neighbors in the area told NEWS9 this kind of argument should never have put the firefighter’s lives in danger.

Families Homeless After Bellaire Fire

The Ohio fire marshal has been called in for a Duplex fire at 1863 Guernsey Street in Bellaire. The Neffs Fire Department found the building fully involved when they arrived at 3:10 Thursday afternoon. Chief John Driscoll said the caus is undetermined at this time. The State Fire Marshall will be in to investigate on Friday. Two families were left homeless after this fire. One dog was inside at the time....and is missing but presumed dead. The Salvation Army is providing help and comfort to the displaced families. Chief Driscoll tells seven news the occupants were sitting outside on the sidewalk in lawn chairs for about an hour this afternoon....and when they looked up....they saw the second and third floors engulfed in flames. He says there is no suspicion of foul play. Several buildings on both sides of the structure have been condemned for demolition and the burning buidling was reportedly having trouble with the electric on Wednesday night.

Toddler Struck By Car

A toddler was struck by a car in Bellaire just feet away from his home Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened just after 3 p.m. on the 4600 block of Noble Street, also known as Old State Route 7.
The boy's mother told police the 1-year-old ran out into the busy street after her, and in just a split second he was struck by an oncoming car.
The child's condition is unknown, but police said he sustained head injuries.
The man who struck the boy told police he never even saw the child.
Some officials said they aren't surprised by the accident because there have been many recent structural changes in the area.
Police said spotlights were removed to save money for the village, and parallel parking is now angled, causing some major blind spots in the area.
The man who struck the child is not facing any charges due to the circumstances of the incident and the area where it occurred.
