Fire deparment tames flames     19 May, 2010, 07:16 pm
Since 1927, the Neffs Fire Department has been serving the community, making Neffs, and now Bellaire, a safer place to live.
A lot has changed over the years and now the department can boast as being one of the most up to date departments in the Ohio Valley.
While the department has operated for most of its existence as a volunteer force, in 2003, the department became a paid department. That same year, the department began serving the village of Bellaire, providing coverage after financial difficulties forced the village to discontinue their Fire and Emergency Medical Service.
Today, Neffs Fire Department has 37 member fire fighters and emergency medical technicians who operate two stations, Station One in Neffs and Station Two on Belmont Street, Bellaire. Both stations are manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide around the clock protection to Neffs and Bellaire, as well as parts of both Pultney and Richland townships. The department has a total of 13 vehicles including four owned by the village of Bellaire.
“I can say this from my heart, I couldn’t be more proud of the guys and the way we do things,” said Neffs Fire Chief John Driscoll. “

BELLAIRE - A structure fire on the 1800 block of Guernsey Street here destroyed a garage and slightly injured one man Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters from Neffs and Shadyside fire departments responded to the scene after the fire was reported shortly before 5 p.m.

According to Neffs Fire Chief John Driscoll, the cause of the fire is accidental, caused by gasoline that spilled from a vehicle stored in the garage. Two men were working on the car at the time and were inside the garage when the fire started.

"They were working on an older automobile and somehow pulled the neck out of the gas tank and gas came out onto the ground," Driscoll said. "A trouble light then got dropped and caught the gas on fire."

One of the two men inside the garage suffered what Driscoll described as minor injuries from light burns and singed hair. The unidentified man ...

Rescued Woman Injured in Bellaire House Fire     8 April, 2009, 11:02 pm

BELLAIRE, Ohio -- At about six o'clock Wednesday night, smoke from an apartment fire in Bellaire could be seen for miles. Three apartments, all housed in one home, were burning when Neffs Firefighters responded.

When firefighters did arrive at the house which was fully involved, they found the first fire hydrant. The problem was, it didn't work.

That's when firefighters had to scramble and come up with an alternative plan. Once they did find a working hydrant five blocks away, they laid a line all the way up 42nd street to feed the fire trucks.

Shadyside Assistant Fire Chief John Shaver said, "Neffs was already here with water on the house from the trucks but they didn't have hydrants so they had two bad hydrants they hit so we laid from the hydrant down by Guernsey Street and laid up and fed their truck. That was our main objective at first to get them water and we got them water and get that going. Then we got our people up here, helping them put the fire out."

A neighbor living across the street, witnessed the building catch on fire and then consume one of its occupants. Jay Wines then responded without even thinking. "I ...
