Rescued Woman Injured in Bellaire House Fire     8 April, 2009, 10:02 pm

BELLAIRE, Ohio -- At about six o'clock Wednesday night, smoke from an apartment fire in Bellaire could be seen for miles. Three apartments, all housed in one home, were burning when Neffs Firefighters responded.

When firefighters did arrive at the house which was fully involved, they found the first fire hydrant. The problem was, it didn't work.

That's when firefighters had to scramble and come up with an alternative plan. Once they did find a working hydrant five blocks away, they laid a line all the way up 42nd street to feed the fire trucks.

Shadyside Assistant Fire Chief John Shaver said, "Neffs was already here with water on the house from the trucks but they didn't have hydrants so they had two bad hydrants they hit so we laid from the hydrant down by Guernsey Street and laid up and fed their truck. That was our main objective at first to get them water and we got them water and get that going. Then we got our people up here, helping them put the fire out."

A neighbor living across the street, witnessed the building catch on fire and then consume one of its occupants. Jay Wines then responded without even thinking. "I ...

Bellaire Fire Requires Response From 15 Departments 1 December, 2007, 11:57 pm

BELLAIRE — Community members already are helping two businesses recover from a Saturday fire that destroyed the building they occupied.

The blaze that consumed a Belmont Street building reportedly was the largest the village had seen in recent years. At least 15 different fire departments responded with more than 100 firefighters for a fire that completely destroyed the structure and two businesses inside it.

And while crews continued to battle the fire into the evening, plans already were under way to help get the businesses back in operation.

The fire was reported around 9:45 a.m. after people saw smoke coming from the building at 3315 Belmont St. It housed Country Square gift and craft store and a gaming parlor.

First to respond to the scene was Neffs Fire Department, which provides fire protection for the village.

According to one report from a firefighter, smoke was coming from the front of the building, but when firefighters broke through windows to get to the source, flames began to shoot from the front of the building.

Firefighters Temporarily Run Out Of Water While Fighting Fire     7 February, 2007, 07:01 pm

POSTED: 1:41 pm EST February 7, 2007
UPDATED: 4:53 pm EST February 7, 2007

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Crews fighting a house fire were forced to call in a tanker task force to assist after they ran out of water.

Officials said the location of the home on Jug Run Road made it difficult to contain the blaze. The home was a complete loss.

No one was inside the home when it burst into flames Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters said the first crew on scene ran out of water and called the tanker task force to the scene. Tankers spread out for close to a mile just to get water from fire hydrants to the home.

The trucks caused a traffic backup along Route 9, but crews said they do whatever is necessary when they are in desperate need of a water supply.

The state fire marshal was heading to the scene Wednesday afternoon to investigate the cause of the blaze.
